Ember-Data Alternatives
Details
If you've used EmberJS at all you've probably also used ember-data. ember-data is the default data persistance layer that ships with Ember and is a great tool for normal CRUD applications.
But there are some cases where it may not be the best fit - offline support and non-RESTful APIs are two common examples. Tonight's theme will be looking at some data persistance alternatives to ember-data for when you need to go outside it's strengths.
Intro to OrbitJS by Josh Justice
A great way to make your Ember app feel more native is to add local storage and data synchronization. But what if you don't want to switch your backend to a proprietary platform like Firebase or Realm? Ember-Orbit to the rescue! As Dan Gebhardt mentioned at EmberConf 2018, Orbit is the future of Ember's data layer. Try it out now with Ember-Orbit. We'll walk through setting up Ember-Orbit in a simple app, and talk about some of the remaining rough edges
About the speaker:
Josh Justice has worked in web development for 14 years across many frontend and backend stacks. He's passionate about increasing developers' quality-of-life by speaking and writing about agile development practices. He works as a consultant at Big Nerd Ranch and runs learntdd.in), a web site offering Test-Driven Development tutorials in a variety of frameworks.
A 10,000 ft intro to Ember-Redux by Chris McCuller
Redux is a simple, extremely powerful state management library used by many JavaScript communities. Chris will walk us through a high-level overview of the key tenants of Redux and show the power of redux via a simple Ember application that uses the ember-redux addon. We'll talk pros/cons and where it fits in the Ember state management ecosystem.
About the speaker:
Chris has been doing Ember/Javascript things at Salesforce Pardot for the last 3 years and did Javascript/.Net things in the aviation industry prior to that. He can be found on the Twitters at @ultimatemonty where you will mostly see retweets of Ember things, cute pets, and Atlanta sports. He also owns the freaking.ninja domain but hasn't quite figured out what to do with it yet.
As always we will have a post meetup gathering for anyone interested. This month we will be at The Ration & Dram which is conveniently located right next door to Big Nerd Ranch.
