Why the Paradigm of a Historical Jesus is Obsolete

AFS proudly presents a discussion of a paradigm shift which began over a decade ago in studies of the origin of Christianity. Prior to this, scholars universally assumed that a historical Jesus existed, and this has led to problematic conclusions about Christianity and its origins. Scholars have recently begun studying the Bible anew on the assumption that there was no historical Jesus. Dr. Carrier will explore this paradigm shift and how it is beginning to produce important new insights into early Christian history and the interpretation of the New Testament.

Richard Carrier is the author of A Better World without God, On the Historicity of Jesus, The Scientist in the Early Roman Empire, and many other books, chapters, and articles. With a Ph.D. in ancient history from Columbia University, he specializes in the modern philosophy of naturalism, the origins of Christianity, and the intellectual history of Greece and Rome.
