Our May outing is a trip to Cartersville for a docent tour of the Booth Western Art Museum and a visit to the Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site, with a stop for lunch.
Booth Western Art Museum, a Smithsonian Institution affiliate is a 120,000 square foot facility housing contemporary art, illustration, movie posters, Civil War art, Indigenous art and depiction, presidential portraits and letters, authentic stagecoaches, and an interactive hands-on gallery for children based on a working ranch.
- The Booth is the only museum of its kind in the Southeast and is the second largest art museum in the state of Georgia (after the High).
Etowah Mounds State Historic Site was home to several thousand Native Americans from 1000 A.D. to 1550 A.D.
- The 54-acre site protects six earthen mounds, a plaza, village site, borrow pits and defensive ditch.
- Etowah Mounds is the most intact Mississippian Culture site in the Southeast.
- Now designated as a National Historic Landmark, Etowah is considered the most intact Mississippian culture site in the Southeast according to Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites.
- Both the historic Muscogee Creek and the Cherokee peoples, who each occupied this area at varying times, hold the site to be sacred.
