Monthly Potluck & Discussion: How to Think Like Socrates (Book)
Details
Monthly potluck dinner at Vaidehi's home. Please bring something to share.
This week, we will be discussing the following new series:
## "How to Think Like Socrates: Ancient Philosophy as a Way of Life in the Modern World"
Book by Donald J. Robertson
> Robertson applies ancient Socratic philosophy to modern life, using a semi-fictional narrative to explore Socrates's life and teachings, and connecting them to modern psychology, particularly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). The book teaches the Socratic method of rigorous self-examination and questioning assumptions to achieve a more virtuous and examined life, making it relevant for contemporary challenges like misinformation.
Donald J. Robertson is a cognitive-behavioral psychotherapist and a key figure in the Modern Stoicism movement. He specializes in integrating ancient Greek and Roman philosophy—particularly Stoicism—with modern evidence-based psychology. He is the author of several bestsellers, including How to Think Like a Roman Emperor (focused on Marcus Aurelius), and Stoicism and the Art of Happiness.
