Cultural Narcissism: Embracing Self Worth Beyond Cultural Expectations w/Aneesa

Details
Cultural narcissism is the belief that one’s own culture, traditions, and values are inherently superior. This mindset can create rigid expectations, making it difficult for individuals to express themselves freely or be accepted for who they are—especially in relationships where different cultural backgrounds come into play.
As an Australian Lebanese Muslim, I grew up balancing multiple cultural influences. However, in my marriage to an Arab from a different background, I experienced the darker side of cultural narcissism—not as a difference in perspectives but as a rigid, controlling dynamic that led to mental and emotional abuse. The expectation to conform, the dismissal of my individuality, and the emotional toll it took are realities many people face but often struggle to talk about.
This conversation isn’t about assigning blame to any one culture but rather about understanding how cultural expectations can be misused to justify control, dominance, or emotional harm. More importantly, it’s about recognizing these patterns and discussing ways to navigate them—whether in relationships, families, or society.
I encourage everyone to share their thoughts and experiences in a way that fosters awareness, healing, and empowerment. Let’s have an open and respectful conversation about how cultural influences shape our lives and how we can break harmful cycles while still honoring our identities.
