What we’re about
If you are excited by science - but not necessarily a science professional - and you live in the Atlanta area, then the Atlanta Science Tavern is the meetup for you.
Our program is centered on a fourth Saturday of the month meeting at a tavern or brewery, which features a speaker - typically a scientist from a nearby university or research center - who presents his or her work to a smart general audience of science enthusiasts. We also host occasional presentations as part of our ongoing Young Researchers Series, which features talks by graduate students and postdocs.
In addition, we organize social outings and field trips that provide opportunities for our members to experience science as it expresses itself in the community at large. Public lectures at local universities, most prominently the Georgia Tech College of Sciences, are a mainstay of our meetup calendar.
See you at the Tavern!
Cheers,
- The Science for Georgia team
Note:
- Unapproved soliciting of any kind is not allowed at our events.

# How Vaccines Work: They Really are Good and Safe
July 23rd, 2025
7pm - 9pm
In Person
Location: Sceptre Brewing Arts, 630 East Lake Dr, Suite E, Decatur, GA 30030
## Description
Your immune system exists to defend your body against things that can infect you, without knowing in advance what those pathogens could be. How does it do this? By being Nature’s most effective engine of controlled, but very fast, evolution. We take advantage of this ability when we make vaccines, which have saved more lives than all other medicines combined.
Here you will learn how vaccines work, and how they are evaluated and approved. Have doubts about vaccines? Worried about additives, or that vaccines might make your children sick or give them autism? You’re not alone – come and ask questions!
## Featured Speaker:
Speaker: M.G. Finn, Professor, School of Chemistry and Biochemistry and School of Biological Sciences, Georgia Institute of Technology

# Monthly South River Water Testing
Parking: ample and free
We will linger in the parking lot for 5-10 minutes before heading down the trail along the water to those first shoals, where we will be doing our testing and mingling etc….
This past year at our Environmental Justice Forums/Townhalls we heard that people want to know more about what health risks from water and air are in their neighborhoods. So we have started on two approaches to that. First is the water testing project mentioned above. Adopt-A-Stream is a state program consisting of volunteers collecting data on the water sources in their neighborhoods and the area around Everett Park along the South River is not represented in this testing project. So we are getting this started, not just to gather and monitor data, but to help the community learn about water testing along the way.
