Details

This event is part of the Origins Lecture Series (http://originslectures.uga.edu/), presented by the Division of Biological Sciences of the University of Georgia

The North Campus Parking Deck on Jackson Street is the closest deck for Chapel visitors. Here's a map (https://originslectures.uga.edu/sites/originslectures.uga.edu/files/chapel_map10.pdf) (PDF) showing all the visitor parking on campus.

Currently there are no social events planned for this meetup. Feel free to use the comments to make carpooling arrangements.

Origin of Life
Mark Farmer
Professor of Cell Biology
Chairman of the Division of Biological Sciences
University of Georgia

http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/7/5/7/8/event_211830072.jpegThe origin of life remains one of the great unsolved mysteries in all of science. Late in life Charles Darwin speculated that life may have begun in “a warm little pond” but today we think it more likely that the earliest life forms emerged in the dark depths of the early Earth’s oceans. Even the simplest of cells is marvelously complex and for this reason there are those who feel that such complexity could not have arisen from natural processes.

In this lecture cell biologist and Chairman of the Division of Biological Sciences at the University of Georgia will explore the transition from complex biochemistry to simple cells and offer explanations as to how the first free-living life forms emerged to eventually give rise to the riot of complex organisms we find today.
