Part IV: Symbolism in the Visual Arts
Details
Throughout human history, art has been one of the primary ways the unconscious expresses itself. From ancient religious imagery to modern painting and sculpture, artists give form to symbolic patterns that reflect deep structures of the psyche. The human tendency to project psychic material into visual form can be seen especially clearly in traditions such as alchemy, where the transformation of matter and the transformation of the psyche were experienced as deeply intertwined.
In this chapter, Jaffé explores how modern art—especially abstract and surrealist movements—reveals the continuing influence of archetypal symbolism even in a secular age.
Together we will explore questions such as:
• Why do symbolic patterns—such as mandalas, spirals, and fractal-like forms—recur in both nature and art?
• What role does the unconscious play in the creative process?
• What can the study of symbolic pre-scientific traditions such as alchemy and astrology reveal about the relationship between psyche, matter, and the development of consciousness?
