What is resilience?
According to the Oxford English dictionary, it is:
noun
1.
the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.
"the often remarkable resilience of so many British institutions"
2.
the ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape; elasticity.
"nylon is excellent in wearability and resilience"
If we are to be honest, how many of us actually feel like we're 'springing back into shape' once we get bent out of shape? What does it take to 'pull ourselves up by our bootstraps', 'get back up on the horse', or even 'just do it'? Do you really feel that you have the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties? If so, congrats! You must have some badass coping skills at the ready as you survive being a professional (and especially being a professional during a pandemic)!
If you're suffering from chronic stress, overwhelm, or burnout, however, I'll venture that these seem like unattainable feats some days. In the midst of my own worst days and months of burnout, I could barely get off the couch, let alone spring back into anything. I was fueled by caffeine to get me through my work days and wine to get me through my nights. I wasn't by any means resilient! But, all of that changed when I started to make some shifts in the way I was doing things, in the way I was living. And, it worked! But, the first step is deciding that resilience is something you want, that you're ready to work towards, that you absolutely have to have. Because, let's be honest- burnout sucks. It sucks as an experience and it feels like it's sucking the life out of you. And life can be so much better, so much happier, and so much more fulfilling. I promise. And, the first step as making the decision. So, are you ready?
