July Meetup - Gobot, Gophercon recap

Details
Hello fellow Gophers! We have an exciting meetup planned this month! This will be the inaugural event for Umbel's new auditorium inside the old City of Austin Seaholm power plant! It's been a few months since we've had talks planned, but I hope to start having them regularly in our new space. We are moving to the 4th Wednesday this month because parking on the street is free. Trevor Rosen will be sharing his experience with Gobot. Umbel is providing pizza, beer, and La Croix for attendees.
Schedule
• 7:00 - Meet and greet, eat pizza, drink beer (responsibly)!
• 7:15 - Announcements, word from our sponsor, job openings
• 7:30-8:00 - Trevor Rosen's talk (abstract below)
• 8:00-9:00 - Gophercon recap, lightning talks and socializing
Talk
Go gets tons of play because of features enabling highly concurrent servers and massive scale. But its excellent standard library and static compilation also make it a great language for the Internet of Things (IoT).
Gobot (http://gobot.io) is a Go library for controlling robots and development boards. It supports programming on over a dozen different platforms — everything from Sphero to Ardrone to Raspberry Pi and Intel Edison — and even comes with a remote web server to allow you to (securely) control your creations remotely.
In this talk, we’ll go over the architecture and capabilities of Gobot, look at some code, and actually plug in some hardware and make it do a couple of things. Hopefully you’ll leave enlightened about this brave new world of IoT and how Go can fit into it.
If you have a supported device and are able to push code to it, etc (i.e. it has an operating system and you’re able to, you know, do things with it), please feel free to bring it and we can help you get started using Gobot to manipulate it.
About the speaker
Trevor Rosen is a native Austinite, Go fanatic, and (minor) Gobot contributor. In his day job, he herds cats and bits as the lead architect on Metasploit, the world’s most infamous hacking toolkit. You can find him on Twitter and GitHub @trevrosen (https://twitter.com/trevrosen).
Location/Parking
Umbel is located at 800 W Cesar Chavez St, Austin, TX 78701. Our guest parking garage is on Walter Seaholm Dr between W 2nd St and W 3rd St. Free parking can be found on the streets nearby.
If utilizing the parking garage, it's $2 per every half hour with a maximum rate of $12. Walk up the garage stairway which will lead you to an open air courtyard shared by Umbel, Athena Health, Optique, Under Armour, and Trader Joe's. Look to the left to find a covered pedestrian path.
If utilizing street parking on W 2nd St, W 3rd St, or Walter Seaholm Dr, there is no cost after 6pm. Find the Trader Joe's main entrance on W 3rd St and walk to the far left. Walk right onto a covered pedestrian path.
Use the covered pedestrian path and follow it towards the silver bollards (photo below). Continue to the left and you'll see the stairs to our sunken garden entrance (photo below). Walk down to our main entrance.
