Trip to Rangitoto with option to overnight camping on Motutapu Island
Details
*UPDATE
Plan is to head over to Rangitoto on the 9.15am ferry from Auckland City. There is also a 9.25am ferry from Devonport also.
Once on the island, plan to head clockwise around the island along the coast to McKenzie Bay whcih has a sandy beach and aparently is a good swimming spot. According to the doc brochure this should take about 2.5 hrs.
We then head along the to the summit and can stop at the lava caves (bring a torch). Its then about a 1hr walk back to the wharf. A total of about 5 hrs walking for the day.
Those not staying the night then head off on the 3.45pm ferry. There is also an option to stay for the later 5pm ferry (both stop in Devonport on return).
Those staying the night can then head towards Home Bay to pitch tents for the night. There is running water (ODC recommend boil before drinking) and toilets at Home Bay.
Next day we'll head out to Billy goat point before return to the ferry.
Suggestion is to stash backpacks for overnighters on day one somewhere out of sight, and perhaps in terts on day two somewhere, so you may want to bring a small day bag.
Rangitoto can get very hot so strongly recommend
Water
Sunscreen
Hat
Sunnies
Lots of water
You might also want
food and drink for time away
sun, rain and insect protection
camera
torch - keep in daypack
tent (for overnighters)
sleeping bag (for overnighters)
camp cooking equipment (for overnighters)
toiletries (for overnighters)
Don't forget to book you tent site via https://booking.doc.go... (https://booking.doc.govt.nz/Menu.aspx?sg=MOT). I will book for the shore birds site.
If you think I have forgotten anything, just pop a comment up so we can all see.
