NZ Antarctic Society Auckland Branch Mid-winter dinner

The Auckland Branch of the New Zealand Antarctic Society is pleased to invite you to join us to celebrate the winter solstice with a mid-winter dinner at the Remuera Golf Club.
Our after-dinner speaker, NZAS President Rex Hendry, has worked regularly in Antarctica, having travelled there 25 times over the last 45 years... ranging in duration from 8 days to 412 days - a little over 1500 days in total! His roles have included electrician, field training instructor, dog handler, mountaineer, field assistant, search and rescue leader, and Scott Base Operations Manager, with experience in both the Ross Dependency and around the Antarctic Peninsula. He has worked on tourist ships to the NZ Sub-Antarctic Islands, Commonwealth Bay and the Ross Sea for nine summer seasons. Previously Rex has been the Chair of the Taranaki-Whanganui Conservation Board and the Chair of Land Search and Rescue NZ. He is currently retired but grows fruit and lavender in Taranaki.
This presentation provides a current overview of the Antarctic and highlights many of the key issues for the region, from oceanographic currents to climate change to tourism to pathogens. The discussion raises many questions about the plight of the Antarctic, the pressures on it, current trends and these critical issues. The presentation then looks at how the NZ Antarctic Society can remain relevant in this rapidly changing context, the recent changes to the organisation and how we are looking to respond.

Parking There is ample parking at the clubhouse
Hospitality We have the exclusive use of the Tui Room, with two big screens for Rex’s presentation and a video call with the Scott Base Winter Over Team.
Cost for the traditional buffet meal (including dessert) and facility hire is $57.50 per head
There is a cash bar. Please advise Roger McGarry when booking of any special dietary requirements
