Port Waikato to Nikau Cave 60km 1000m elevation Gravel/Road
Details
This is one of the most scenic gravel rides in the Auckland/Waikato area.
There will be great views over stunning limestone formations and canyons. It starts on Port Waikato Waikaretu Rd up a long climb on sealed road, but after around 7km turns into gravel. On the other side of the hill the limestone scenery starts. It is also called Limestone Downs.
Riding downhill offers great views over the canyons with good photo opportunities. After about 15km the limestone formations end and this is the point where some might want to return to Port Waikato. The others continue towards Nikau Cave Cafe' which is located in canyon like surroundings. The last 7 or 8km are on sealed roads.
After a nice coffee break at the cafe' we'll return the same way.
I would recommend car pooling because Port Waikato is around 100km from Auckland.
WHAT TO BRING
Spare tube and tools, rain jacket, snacks and water.
LEVEL OF FITNESS
There will be several hills, so absolutely not a beginners ride if you are using a conventional bike. Especially if you would like to go the full distance to the cafe'.
No problem with an electric bike.
WHAT KIND OF BIKES
Mtb's, electric bikes with gravel tires and gravel bikes.
