35kms, 120m elevation, allow 2.5hrs including stops.

This might be the flattest ride you ever do in Auckland. It's a good introduction to gravel if you are new, and is surprisingly scenic - you'll forget you are so close to the city. The stone fields are beautiful. Being a shorter ride, to make it more challenging, feel free to ride to the start from home.

With thanks to the Ambury Gravellers for sharing their route.

START LOCATION:
Carpark at Mangere Boating Club off Kiwi Esplanade, next to Mangere Bridge Boat Ramp - but don't be confused by the boat ramp at the old bridge. This one is further down towards Ambury Farm. There are toilets here and a large carpark. Link in google maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/WWEgdunF4t3nEY5F9

COFFEE / FOOD:
For those that would like to have coffee post ride, Rosbake Cafe in Mangere is world-famous and is close to the carpark. It's at 20 Coronation Road. If it's busy and there are a bunch of us, you can take your food to the park across the road.

PACE:
Social, no drop. Faster riders, expect to wait at the top of hills, or just chill. If there are sufficient numbers and a second group leader available we may divide into two groups.

SKILL LEVEL:
Gravel newbies welcome. This is a chance to get used to the sensation of riding on a variety of gravel surfaces – smooth, loose and chunky patches.

SUITABLE BIKES:
Tyres need to have tread, so road bikes are unsuitable. 35mm wide tyres are the recommended minimum width but it will be quite uncomfortable. Hardtail mountain bikes, flat bar and drop bar gravel bikes are most suitable.

WHAT TO BRING:
Water, snacks, puncture repair kit and a spare tube, rain jacket if weather looks uncertain.

WEATHER/RIDE STATUS:
Check back here the night before if in doubt.
