📜 On Saturday 13th July, we are going for a day hike, starting at Karekare, then walk along the Coman's coastal cliff track to Mercer Bay. Before climbing down, to Mercer Bay, we will also visit Te Ahua lookout point. After Mercer Bay we head to Paratahi island if the tide is still low enough, and then return back to Karekare beach and to the car park where we will finish.

The drive from New World is about 45 minutes west of Auckland, and is graded as a 3.5 hike, and is slightly more difficult than average, mainly due to a very steep climb down to Mercer Bay. In my opinion, this hike is one of Auckland's best kept secrets.

📌For those keen for some adventure, some of us may try to go, across a lake and then through a flooded tunnel, which may mean swimming if the water is deep. However it is unknown as to how deep it will be, as the landscape is always changing. After possible swimming or wading there is a short stretch that requires crawling on hands and knees on sand. The tunnel route is optional, and the remainder of the group will go around bottom of cliffs and meet on the other side of the tunnel. Make sure you have warm clothes after possibly getting wet.

❌❗ If you are slow, you are strongly advised not to join this hike. It will require climbing down a very steep unofficial track with 4 different sets of ropes to hold on to. You also will almost certainly get your shoes/boots wet, as we probably need to cross parts, where the tide has not gone out fully. Please do not turn up in jeans, cotton tee shirt, or anything in cotton! If it gets wet, then you will very quickly get cold. It is advised to wear synthetic or woollen clothing.
