This meetup is for people who want to learn improv or sketch comedy, discuss the many benefits of improvisation OR for people who just want to meetup to enjoy improv comedy shows!
Improv is a life changing art form that will help you grow in your self-confidence as you discover that you can handle anything life throws at you, after all, life is improvised. If you’re interested, don’t hesitate to sign up.

This is a very special Improverished open improv workshop!
For one month only, our regular monthly workshop will be on a Sunday afternoon at the Pumphouse Theatre, to close out our school holiday show season!
We look forward to seeing some new and returning faces at this special one-off trip to the North Shore.
This is an Improverished open improv workshop. A fun monthly event for new and experienced improvisors alike to come together in a low-pressure friendly environment to try some improv. Never done improv before? You're welcome to come along and try it out! Done tons of improv before? You're welcome to come along too!
Improverished is a joyful improvised theatre company that's been operating since 2015. This is an open workshop that anyone with any level of improv experience is welcome to attend. What exactly we cover will depend on who ends up coming along on the day, but expect some fun improv warmups, some improv games, some laughs and some storytelling. Accessibility and providing an entry point for new improvisors is a core part of our theatre company's kaupapa so these open workshops are our way of spreading improv joy in the community and creating a welcoming entry-point or coming-together point for people to do some improv.
There is no fee to attend this workshop, however you're welcome to contribute an optional koha of a few dollars towards the venue hire cost. We recommend between $2-$10 depending on your financial circumstances.
September workshop will be run by Improverished members Rebecca Mary Gwendolon and Gareth Blackler.
3-5pm on Sunday 28 September in the Pumphouse Theatre Genevieve Becroft Auditorium (i.e. the main theatre).
There is no fee to attend this workshop, however you're welcome to contribute an optional Koha of a few dollars towards the venue hire cost. You're welcome to bring cash or we'll share our bank account number at the end if you'd like to do a transfer. Suggested Koha is $2-$10 depending on your financial situation.

3-hour workshop on Saturday, October 11th (10 AM - 1 PM)
Hosted in Auckland Central (exact location provided after signing up)Create performances that leave audiences asking the best question of all: “Wait… that was improvised?”
This workshop is designed both to elevate your craft as a performer on stage and to help you shape the shows you are in, or the shows you have devised yourself. We’ll explore how every single detail, from the moment the audience enters the theatre to the way the final scene lands, contributes to the overall impact.Expect to work on:
- Welcoming and interacting with the audience
- Using suggestions in fresh and creative ways
- Transitions that feel seamless and intentional
- Crafting strong show endings
- Integrating lights, music, and technology as storytelling tools
Brought to you by the creative mind behind shows such as "Hotel Sol", "Comedy World League", and "La Catrina", performances that have toured festivals around the world. This workshop invites you to see every aspect of your show as part of the art form. Everything matters, and everything contributes to the magic of an improv show that feels almost impossible to have been created in the moment.

👥 Participant Requirement
This workshop is for those who have completed at least an Intro to Improv or Improv 101 course and are familiar with the core fundamentals of Improv; or with previous experience in performing arts.***
👤 About the Instructor
Matías Avaca is an Argentinian improviser based in Aotearoa. He co-founded Mabel Impro and the Auckland Improv Festival, and leads Laenye Productions, a platform uplifting Spanish-speaking artists. Known for bridging linguistic and cultural divides on stage, Matías has taught and performed in over 15 countries, leaving a lasting mark on the global improv scene.
