This January, journey into the world of Takeshi Kitano with our two-part screening series, The Duality of Takeshi Kitano. Featuring Brother and Kikujiro, this program reveals the striking duality in Kitano's work: unflinching violence and heartfelt warmth.

Takeshi Kitano, an internationally renowned Japanese filmmaker, is a master of contrasts. His films blend minimalist visuals and sharp dialogue to explore deep emotions and complex social themes. Kitano’s unique artistry allows him to be both a painter of violence and a poet of tenderness.

Part Two: Kikujiro
In stark contrast to Brother, Kikujiro showcases Takeshi Kitano’s gentler, more whimsical side. This heartwarming road movie follows the unlikely journey of a young boy searching for his mother, accompanied by a gruff yet endearing drifter played by Kitano himself.

Through its playful humor, tender moments, and dreamlike storytelling, Kikujiro reveals Kitano’s gift for capturing the beauty of small, everyday connections. The film’s poetic imagery and Joe Hisaishi’s iconic score create an atmosphere of nostalgia and quiet wonder, making it one of Kitano’s most beloved works.

After the screening, join us for a discussion as we delve into the film’s emotional depth, its portrayal of human connection, and how it exemplifies the softer side of Kitano’s artistic duality. Whether you’re revisiting this classic or discovering it for the first time, Kikujiro is sure to leave a lasting impression.
