Ee.Ma.Yau (2018) is a Malayalam-language film directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery. Set in a coastal village in Kerala, the film follows Eeshi, a son who wants to give his father, Vavachan Mesthiri, a grand funeral. After a night of drinking, Vavachan suddenly dies, leaving Eeshi and his close friend Ayyappan to manage the funeral arrangements. However, their efforts are obstructed by a series of hurdles.
It is a dark satire that explores themes of death, grief, and societal hypocrisy with a mix of realism and absurdity. The film masterfully blends humor, grief, and existential themes, creating a poignant commentary on the rituals surrounding death and the complexities of human relationships. With its intense performances and Lijo Jose Pellissery's signature long takes, Ee.Ma.Yau is a visually striking and emotionally powerful cinematic experience.
