A Swedish Love Story (Sweden, 1970, M)

Details

Rating: M – Suitable for mature audiences; contains sexual references.

This is the second film is our series on "young love romance". It is an oldie but goodie. Two teenagers fall in love, but their parents dismiss their relationship as "puppy love" and just a "passing crush".

I have chosen this film because it is Swedish and contrasts with the Japanese film last week, and is also from an earlier period - 1970. The two young leads could be your grandparents .....

One reviewer wrote that the film is "wickedly humorous and poignant love story between two romantic adolescents experiencing love for the first time."

This film was released in the same year as the far more famous US film Love Story, with Ryan O'Neill and Ali McGraw. The Swedish film is also about doomed love but is far more subtle. It relies on the unspoken look and the small gesture to convey love. A great film for those wanting to know (or remember) the trials of a first teenage romance.

Note: We’ll be in either the lounge (ground floor) or hall (first floor) at the Ellen Melville Centre. Please enter from the right side and arrive on time.
