Words and Wisdom: Stoic Perspectives on Rhetoric
Details
Join us for a discussion exploring how classical Stoicism illuminates the role of rhetoric in understanding and persuading, both in public life and in our personal reasoning.
Stoicism is a philosophy of virtue and rational judgement that also extends to social and civic life through its account of justice, universal law, and duties to others. Classical rhetorical theory treats rhetoric as the art of persuasion, often debated for its moral risks, yet frequently linked to truth and justice in civic deliberation. Stoic practices of disciplined assent and clarity can therefore support responsible rhetoric by sharpening evaluation of arguments and resisting manipulative appeal.
Discussion themes will include:
- How Stoic reason can guide effective, ethical rhetoric.
- The historical link between Stoic philosophy and classical rhetoric: persuasion as a tool for understanding, not manipulation.
- Practical applications for navigating modern public discourse, from everyday conversations to political debates.
Dr Dmitry Zavialov will lead this discussion-based session. Come prepared to share examples, ask questions, or simply listen and reflect. The aim is to explore how Stoicism helps us reason clearly while engaging with others in thoughtful, principled dialogue.
