This enduring tale encapsulates a tragic love story - an arranged marriage between a young Japanese geisha called Cio Cio San (Butterfly) and an American naval officer, Pinkerton. After the wedding, San is soon abandoned by Pinkerton, but stays hopeful waiting for his return.
