Australia’s 11 Highest Peaks, 47km Full Backpack (4 Days, Easter Long Weekend)
Details
Australia's Eleven Highest Peak Hike (47KM) Hard Full Backpack Over 4 Days. Easter Long Weekend!
The Snowy Mountains in New South Wales and the Victorian Alps, part of the Great Dividing Range, boast the tallest peaks on the Australian mainland. This range forms a natural divide between the central lowlands and the eastern highlands.
Remarkably, all eleven of Australia’s highest peaks are situated within Kosciuszko National Park, with the summits located within a twelve-kilometre radius of each other.
The trail spans approximately forty-seven kilometres and typically requires 3-4 days to complete, assuming an average of six hours of hiking per day.
The Hike:
Starting from Charlotte Pass, the route generally follows parts of the Main Range Track and the Summit Walk, both well-known alpine trails. However, reaching many of the peaks involves deviating from these established paths and requires cross-country hiking over unmarked or non existent trails.
Basic map and ground navigation skills are sufficient for summiting each peak, but poor weather can increase the difficulty. Therefore, it’s advisable for members to be prepared for conditions.
Friday:
Plan to meet promptly at 8:00 a.m. at Jindabyne Visitor Information Centre. We will be driving down on Thursday evening and staying in Jindabyne You can choose to drive down after work on Thursday or very early on Friday morning. Please drive safely, remember to drive, revive, and survive.
After car shuffle, we will set off at 8:30 a.m. to drive to Charlotte Pass (don't forget that a parks pass is required). Our hike will start and end at Charlotte Pass. Expect to cover about 12 kilometres each day, with plenty of ups and downs as we tackle Australia’s highest peaks.
Note that while there is no scrambling involved, the terrain will be challenging. Be aware that weather conditions in the Snowy Mountains can be harsh. Cold, wet, and potentially snowy. Night time temperatures are likely to drop below freezing, so be prepared for cold conditions.
