FYI- Ongoing body of work-examines cultural fluidity, adaptation,& identity through ceramic form.Drawing inspiration from Korean artifacts & traditional pottery, Surl approaches ceramics as form of record keeping & self examination. His work reflects lived experience shaped by moving between cultures & traditions with meaning emerging through act of making, his repeated engagement over time, & memory. Sculptures demonstrate high level of technical skill & strong sculptural presence. Relationship between glaze & structure is intentional,giving work a quiet strength while allowing natural variation to occur through firing process. Each piece functions as a lasting record of artist’s relationships to his surroundings, carrying forward beyond its moment of making & continuing to accumulate new readings through time & encounter.
