(Dwntn) Sonya Berg: Re-Membering

Artist statement:
“In these works, I explore tension between abstract & representation,& between arbitrariness & specificity, mediated through process & painting. In these works, I use imagery of nature brought into domestic spaces as metaphor for memory,& painting process as ways we can reshape personal narratives in pursuit of transformation. Series draws from my ongoing practice of photographing house plants as a way to document daily mundane moments,without complication or intimacy of including a person’s face. Pictures of plants, composed quickly with my phone camera, serve as portraits of time& reminders of a memory as I quickly & intuitively capture light & space. Through expressive marks & vibrant palette, I invite viewer to see transformed space as one of possibility where absence can lead to hope.”
