Opening reception

In fabricating Authenticity, Maknojia traces history of the Ardabil carpets, pair of monumental Persian rugs woven in the 16th c. Maknojia invites viewers to question how institutions manufacture authenticity & how narratives are constructed through display. By the late 19th c. Carpets had deteriorated & wee acquired by London’s Victoria & Albert museum, where one carpet was restored using fragments from twin. Now housed at L.A. county Museum of Art, its damaged condition exposes how cultural objects are reshaped to save geographical & ideological interests.
