From Spellerberg Projects:
"Spellerberg Projects presents Can’t see the forest for the trees, a site-specific installation by Lauren Michelle Peterson. Working primarily with found and natural objects collected over time and continually repurposed, Peterson explores the relationship between representation, materiality, and the human systems used to frame and measure reality.
The installation plays with the aesthetics of calibration devices and scientific optical illusions to examine how methods of measurement and perception can be altered to produce alternative frameworks. In this work, Peterson utilizes devalued objects to consider their lifespans beyond a human time scale and investigate how small bits of matter accumulate to create complex, shifting networks of value and purpose. As Peterson notes, the project "thinks about how the discreteness of objects is produced through relational perceptions," drawing on an "obsession with how one thing turns into another." By examining spatial location, proximity, and vantage point, the installation questions how individual units form larger collectives and where boundaries are drawn between part and whole."
