From Shady Springs:
"Artists John Patrick Cobb and Kiah Denson invite you to experience their latest works at a little-known slice of Old Austin. The two "country" neighbors—whose properties flank either side of Shady Springs, the Denson family’s long-running private venue in southeast Austin—will come together for a non-traditional exhibit of new work in a temporary gallery space. Both artists share a fondness and respect for nature and derive imagery and inspiration, directly and indirectly, from their home environment around Carson Creek. Drawing from these roots, the show will be held at Shady Springs in the cedar dancehall Denson’s father built in 1970. Entitled "Fields & Forms: The Seen & Unseen", the show juxtaposes Cobb's small, plein air landscapes with Denson's larger, gestural abstracts. Coinciding with the Austin Studio Tour, they have also invited five guest artists to display work in the space. Opening reception: Thursday November 12, 6-8pm. Weekend tour hours: November 14-15 & 21-22, 11am-5pm daily. Not open to the public outside of listed days and hours. Free, ample parking. Limited accessible parking by the dancehall.
John Cobb was born in Austin, Texas. Cobb entered the Rhode Island School of Design in 1976, pursued independent study in Europe, and received his art degree at St. Edward’s University in 1983. He is well known for his meticulous and exacting approach to painting in addition to his use of old fashioned techniques—in particular, his intricate gouache landscapes and wildly impressive 45-year masterpiece, "The Chapel Shrine", a 27-painting installation of egg tempera and gold leaf biblical imagery displayed in a transportable, handmade wooden structure.
Kiah Denson was born in Austin, TX. She earned a BA in Studio Art from Colorado College (Colorado Springs, CO). She has worked with a number of designers, consultants, galleries and individual collectors across the country for over 15 years. Her abstract ink and acrylic paintings are colorful, organic and energetic. Alongside her art practice, she has turned much of her focus toward managing the 20-acre Shady Springs property under the skillful mentorship of her father—a true labor of love. Balancing her two passions has always felt like a delicate and worthy dance, and she is pleased to merge the two for the first time during this special event."
