"Battle Royale" was a best-seller when released in Japan with a controversial film adaptation. The book and movie follow very similar story to "The Hunger Games" : a dystopian future sees a society that places teenagers on an island for them to battle it out until last person standing. It was a best-seller when released in Japan.
Couple questions we can discuss:
- The movie might not go into as much depth about the society’s political and social structures. Do you think the film captures the book’s critique of this authoritarian regime effectively, or does the book offer more insight?
- The film's visual style, including the use of music and cinematography, contributes to its unique atmosphere. How does this atmosphere compare to the tone of the book?
- Do you think the film’s use of surreal or exaggerated imagery (such as the bright colors, over-the-top violence, or jarring music) effectively captures the novel’s satirical and dark tone?
- What are some key moments or scenes from the book that you were disappointed were either omitted or changed in the film?
