What we’re about
Watching good movies in the Austin area and hanging out before/after the screenings at bars/restaurants close to the venues.
This group's purpose is to cultivate a community of folks who share the love of Cinema.
We have an active Discord Server to connect with our members: https://discord.gg/eGnzMhbe
Any attempt to define "arthouse" movies, as it usually goes with definitions, is doomed to fail. A rough demarcation, nevertheless, could do some good. I see the artistic value of a cinematic production in its conscious or unconsciousness attempt for reaching emotional/intellectual depth, to defamiliarize the familiar, to bring out some unknown to the view, to shake and enrich our existence. As such, the attempt is more important than the result and the failures valuable in one way or another.
We do not need to watch Godard backwards to count as an "arthouse movie" club, although that sounds fun. But we won't watch the 537th remake of Superman or James Bond here. Everyone else does. Let's do something more interesting.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST - JEAN COCTEAU
AFS Cinema, 6226 Middle Fiskville Rd, Austin, TX, USDirected by Jean Cocteau
France, 1946, 1h 33min, DCP, In French with English Subtitles.
“One of the most magical of all films.”
—Roger Ebert
“A self-conscious but never precious attempt to revisit childhood fantasies and half-remembered dreams.”
—Time Out
We throw the term “magic” around quite a lot in relation to cinema. Jean Cocteau’s fairy tale adaptation really earns the descriptor with its filigree of silvery tones and its gorgeously surreal love story. This is poetry on celluloid.

TASTE OF CHERRY - ABBAS KIAROSTAMI
AFS Cinema, 6226 Middle Fiskville Rd, Austin, TX, USDirected by Abbas Kiarostami
Iran, 1997, 1h 39min, DCP, In Persian with English subtitles.
In this characteristically poetic and philosophically rich Kiarostami classic, a man (the recently departed Homayoun Ershadi) is seeking only one thing — someone to bury him after he commits suicide. It’s a tough task and may be futile. When he does interest a stranger in the job, things get even more complicated. New 4K restoration.

The Man Who Fell To Earth - dir: Nicholas Roeg (UK, 1976, 2h 18 mins)
Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, 2700 W Anderson Ln, Austin, TX, USThe Man Who Fell to Earth is a daring exploration of science fiction as an art form. The story of an alien on an elaborate rescue mission provides the launching pad for Nicolas Roeg’s visual tour de force, a formally adventurous examination of alienation in contemporary life. Rock legend David Bowie, in his acting debut, completely embodies the title role, while Candy Clark, Buck Henry, and Rip Torn turn in pitch-perfect supporting performances. The film’s hallucinatory vision was obscured in the American theatrical release, which deleted nearly twenty minutes of crucial scenes and details. This screening includes the restored footage as envisioned by Nicolas Roeg.
