About us
Watching good movies in the Austin area and hanging out before/after the screenings at bars/restaurants close to the venues.
This group's purpose is to cultivate a community of folks who share the love of Cinema.
Any attempt to define "arthouse" movies, as it usually goes with definitions, is doomed to fail. A rough demarcation, nevertheless, could do some good. I see the artistic value of a cinematic production in its conscious or unconsciousness attempt for reaching emotional/intellectual depth, to defamiliarize the familiar, to bring out some unknown to the view, to shake and enrich our existence. As such, the attempt is more important than the result and the failures valuable in one way or another.
We do not need to watch Godard backwards to count as an "arthouse movie" club, although that sounds fun. But we won't watch the 537th remake of Superman or James Bond here. Everyone else does. Let's do something more interesting.

BITTER RICE - GIUSEPPE DE SANTIS
AFS Cinema, 6226 Middle Fiskville Rd, Austin, TX, USDirected by Giuseppe De Santis
Italy, 1949, 1h 48min, DCP, In Italian with English subtitles.
“A fascinating example of neorealist pulp.”
—The New York TimesThis is the film that broke Italian Neorealism at the domestic Italian box office and had arthouse patrons lining up around the block in the cosmopolitan centers of the world. The great success was partly because of its depiction of poor but honorable female rice-field workers who become entangled in a criminal plot foisted upon them by a charming hood (Vittorio Gassman). But the main part of the appeal was the up-and-coming actress Silvana Mangano as a worker who is seduced by the easy money and easy virtue of the criminal life.

Days and Nights in the Forest - Satyajit Ray
AFS Cinema, 6226 Middle Fiskville Rd, Austin, TX, USDirected by Satyajit Ray
India, 1970, 1h 57min, DCP, In Bengali with English subtitles.
“Satyajit Ray’s seriocomic delight DAYS AND NIGHTS IN THE FOREST sharply demonstrates that even when getting away from it all, you can never escape your own hopelessly wretched self.”
—4Columns
“DAYS AND NIGHTS IN THE FOREST… the very title rings with enchantment, and the old Ray magic is soon at work again … A poetic masterpiece.”
—Sight and Sound
One of writer-director-composer Satyajit Ray’s best and heretofore least accessible films is back in a new restoration. Four cosmopolitan sophisticates from Kolkata attempt to go “back to the garden” — a popular pursuit in the Age of Aquarius. The quartet finds many of their assumptions about rural/urban divisions (and, importantly, caste divisions) shattered in this breezy but multilayered comedy of manners and self-discovery.-- Write-up by the Austin Film SocietyMeetup Ratings:
