Details

Directed by Peter Weir
Australia, 1975, 1h 55min, in English

"What we see and what we seem are but a dream, a dream within a dream."

Considered an essential film of 70s Australian New Wave, Picnic at Hanging Rock weaves together folklore, natural history, dreams, and nightmares to illustrate how innocence can shatter without reason. Based on Joan Lindsay's novel, the story speaks in hushed tones of societal pressures and repression young girls face while attempting to make sense of the mystical and haunting power of Hanging Rock.
