Presenter: Caryn Eaton, Drupal Designer and Developer, Kanopi Studios

One of the hottest topics in Drupal circles this past year is the concept of Component Driven Design to streamline front-end development and theming. While atomic design principles are not new to the design community, the introduction of twig in D8 provides those of us designing for Drupal a unique platform to integrate tools like Pattern Lab and KSSNode to break free of a world constrained by flat PSDs. Awesome right? Now what?

This is where the work really begins. Moving an organization away from static designs means a fundamental shift in the internal process for both your team and clients alike. It’s a good and needed change for the better! In the world of responsive design, we all know that a flat PSD is unable to adequately set client expectation and provide unambiguous design targets to developers in our non-pixel perfect world. After all, when you design a website, you are designing an entire ecosystem, not just a singular page.

Key concepts:

  1. What are the benefits of component driven design?

  2. What does the toolset look like?

  3. Where does this fit into the workflow on a typical web project?

  4. What are the design deliverables (style-guide versus page) and how to manage client expectations?
