Walter E. Long Metro Park Morning Walk & Austin Powwow
Walter E Long Park, 6614 Blue Bluff Rd, Austin, TX, USWalter E. Long Metro Park Morning Walk & Austin Powwow
Let's meet up to attend the 2025 Austin Powwow and American Indian Heritage Festival!
We will meet at 9am on Saturday, November 22nd, at the picnic tables just inside the gate of Walter E. Long Metro Park. There isn't really a hiking trail at Walter E. Long; we'll walk our own hike along the shoreline for 2 to 3 miles to get a little bit of morning exercise before heading over to the Travis County Expo Center for the Powwow. Walter E. Long charges an entrance fee to drive into the park. You don't have to drive in! Instead, you can park along the fence, just outside the gate, and walk in.
You will need to buy a ticket to get into the Powwow. Tickets are only $10.38 if purchased online before the event. You can buy a ticket here:

Lake Mead, Nevada Hiking & Camping - Las Vegas Fun & Styx Concert
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, 3600 Presidential Blvd, Austin, TX, USLake Mead, Nevada Hiking & Camping - Las Vegas Fun & Styx Concert
Nevada's cooler January temperatures and current hotel discounts present an opportunity for a unique long weekend of hiking and camping at Lake Mead and a couple nights of fun in Las Vegas!
Here's the overall plan:
- Thursday, January 29th, 2026 - Arrive early enough at Las Vegas airport to meet up in baggage claim by 10am PT (I have already booked Southwest flight #1813, which leaves Austin at 6:40am and arrives in Las Vegas at 7:45am.)
- Pick up rental cars or passenger vans and drive towards Lake Mead.
- Hike #1 - Stop at While Owl Canyon trailhead for the first planned hike. Here's a good video of this hike.
- Campout - One Night, 1/29 - We'll camp at Boulder Beach Campground at Lake Mead.in one (or more) of the Group Sites. We will finalize meal and gear planning during future group planning meetings.
- Hike #2 - After enjoying an amazing sunrise at Lake Mead, we'll break camp, pack up, and drive to the Historic Railroad Trail. Hiking the Historic Railroad Rail will take us to the Hoover Dam, where we can either do a guided tour or explore on our own. Here's a good video of this hike.
- Las Vegas (2-night stay, 1/30 & 1/31)- After exploring the Hoover Dam, we'll drive to Las Vegas (only about 45 minutes to one-hour drive) to check into hotels. Harrah's, Flamingo, and LINQ have really good rates currently; and if everyone books their hotel in this area of the strip, it will make it easier for the drivers of the rentals cars/vans to drop everyone off and then return the rental vehicles to the airport. I have already booked 2 nights (Friday and Saturday) at Harrah's.
- Styx concert (Saturday night, Venetian Theatre, 1/31) - This event is optional, but it will be great if some of the group wants to see Styx in concert. They will be playing their classic Pieces of Eight album in its entirety during this show.
- Sunday, February 1st, 2026 - Fly home. I have already booked Southwest flight #255, which leaves Las Vegas at 3:30pm and arrives in Austin at 8:05pm.
Everyone starts on the waitlist for this event. To move from the Waitlist to the Going list, you will need to pay a calculated per-attendee portion of the rental vehicles, group camp site fee, Lake Mead entrance fee, and Uber fee for the drivers of the rental vehicles to get back from the airport to their hotels after dropping off the cars/vans. The total fee is estimated to be only about $40.00 per person. I am not charging anything to organize this event.
Attendees will need to book and pay for their own airfare, hotel, meals, and entertainment.
I'll schedule an online informational meeting soon to review logistic details and answer questions.
