**POSTPONED TO JULY 2027** Exact dates TBD. If you are interested in updates regarding this trip, join the waitlist,

Mt. Shasta is the 2nd highest peak in the Cascades, the 5th highest peak in California, and its northernmost 14er. It is blanketed by seven named glaciers, and we're gonna stand on top of this impressive beauty.

Lassen Volcanic National Park is home to steaming fumaroles, meadows freckled with wildflowers, clear mountain lakes, and numerous volcanoes. Jagged peaks tell the story of its eruptive past while hot water continues to shape the land. We will take advantage of LVNP's proximity to Shasta to enjoy these sights and acclimatize to altitude before tackling Shasta.

Previous experience or training with walking in crampons and ice axe self-arrest are required for this trip, along with a high level of fitness and alpine camping self-sufficiency.

For Mt. Shasta, required gear includes mountaineering boots, crampons, ice axe, and climbing helmet. These items can be rented for the climb at the Fifth Season in the city of Mount Shasta, CA. Reserving your rental as soon as possible is recommended. We will be climbing a route that does not have crevasse hazards and does not require any ropework, so harnesses and protection hardware will not be required. Hiking in Lassen Volcanic National Park is nontechnical and requires no special gear.

Approximate itinerary:

  • Day 1: Fly to Redding, CA. Rent cars, drive to Summit Lake campground (elev. 6700 ft) in Lassen Volcanic National Park.
  • Day 2: Half-day acclimatization hike of Brokeoff Mountain (elev. 9235 ft). Explore other park sights for the rest of the day. Camp again at Summit Lake.
  • Day 3: Break camp, drive to Mount Shasta city to pick up rental gear and purchase climbing permits. Drive to Mt. Shasta trailhead. Climb to high camp location at ~10,000 ft.
  • Day 4: Get an early alpine start to climb to the summit of Mt. Shasta (14,162 ft), then descend, pack up camp, and return to the trailhead. Drive to a hotel in Redding.
  • Day 5: Fly back to Austin.
