Rescue Native Plants from Impending Construction

Details

Come help rescue native plants for use in Austin parks and preserves from a site above Lake Austin west of Loop 360. Many different species native to the Hill Country are available. There are many ways to help out. The simplest way is incredibly effective: Gather buckets and tubs of disturbed topsoil. That soil contains the native seedbank. It can be scattered at other locations to rescue species were aren't even aware are there.

Although our main goal is to improve the habitat in Austin's vireo preserve, you may gather a few plants or seeds for your own landscape, too.

To sign up for this event, go to the NPSOT-Austin GivePulse page. I will not be able to be there, but a volunteer from Texas Master Naturalists or the Native Plant Society of Texas Austin chapter will be providing able leadership.

Keep these points in mind:

  • Access is controlled. You must arrive at 9:30 a.m. to be let through the security gate.
  • You may leave whenever you like.
  • Bring tools for yourself and pots if you have them.
  • Bring water for yourself and, if possible, for the rescued plants.
  • Dress appropriately—sturdy shoes, protection from sun and brush, and so on.

Be safe and have fun—and thanks again for helping the Sierra Club contribute to this important effort!
