About us

Austin's trails tell stories that span more than 100 million years. Join us as we explore creeks, canyons, springs, and limestone bluffs while learning how to "read" the landscape around us.

This is a casual hiking group for anyone curious about the natural history of Central Texas—no geology background required. Along the way, we'll stop to examine rock layers, fossils, caves, springs, faults, and landforms, and discuss how ancient tropical seas, changing climates, and groundwater shaped the places we enjoy today.

Our walks focus on observation rather than technical jargon. We will learn to recognize features such as limestone ledges, fossil-rich beds, karst landscapes, and creek formations, and discover what they reveal about Austin's past. Every outcrop, bluff, and creek crossing becomes a clue in the story of the Hill Country.

Typical destinations may include Bull Creek, Barton Creek, St. Edward's Park, the Lake Travis shoreline, and other local sites where geology is visible and accessible.

Whether you're a hiker, nature enthusiast, photographer, amateur naturalist, or simply someone who enjoys being outdoors, Austin Rock Walkers offers a chance to see familiar trails with new eyes.

Come walk with us and discover the ancient landscapes hidden beneath your feet.
