Is AI conscious? Should it have rights and protections? Many leading thinkers say yes — but our guest speaker says physics itself rules it out. In this talk, he’ll argue that digital computers can never be conscious, and that most mainstream theories of consciousness are fundamentally incompatible with the laws of nature.

Dr. Mallavarapu is a scientist, inventor, entrepreneur and investor and holds a PhD from the University of California, San Francisco.
His scientific work spans computer science, mathematical systems biology, biochemistry, and cell biology. He is the recipient of the Council of Systems Biology Technology Award for his development of mathematical techniques and a language for modeling complex living systems. Aneil also was recognized as a key contributor to industrial genomics databases and high throughput biology techniques that have been used by some of the world’s largest biopharma firms. His work led to the creation of the Virtual Cell Program at the Harvard Medical School Department of Systems Biology. Dr. Mallavarapu has held executive and co-founder roles at a number of companies in the San Francisco Bay Area. Currently, he runs an investment firm focusing on AI, life and health tech with Linea Avey, the co-founder of 23andMe.
