Power, Politics, and Climate: Actually Stopping Climate Change
by Bob Hendricks
Our climate emergency worsens. U.S. fails on any significant action to deal with the crisis. If methane leakage and Scope 3 emissions (indirect emissions embedded in products we buy) were included, we’d show huge and increasing amounts of greenhouse gas emissions year by year. We must change this. We must shift power dynamics on climate and effectively use the power we have.
Bob Hendricks will present an analysis of power, the role of national, state, and local governments as well as individual choices towards stopping climate change. He’ll discuss the ways to shift the current situation including the roles of protest, lobbying, education, and organizing. After a brief presentation, we will discuss power dynamics. It is clear that part of that shift must be the election of climate-friendly legislators.
Following the power discussion, Chris Cruz and Raphael Schwartz, co-chairs of the Austin Political Committee, will present options for strategically becoming involved in this year’s political campaigns: who to target, what actions to take. Learn about and discuss how to make the time we spend on the elections most effective.
Please join us. Be a part of the solution. It won’t require large time commitments but we need you.
Bob Hendricks, chair of the Austin Executive Committee of the Austin Sierra Club and co-chair of the Climate Change Committee.
