Big Data Aggregation from the Ground Up + An Introduction to Apache Streams

Details
The Austin Data Meetup continues on its regular third Monday of each month date, at WeWork in downtown Austin.
We're planning 2 presentations for this Meetup - both technical introductions. As usual, there will also be time for shout outs and networking.
- Big Data Aggregation from the Ground Up
How do you build a big data aggregation "analytics" system from the ground up? Yes - from the ground up! What decisions need to be made? What has to be done? What are the key challenges and trade-offs? How can you make it fast and scalable? All these questions will be addressed. There will also be a live demo, and time for audience Q&A.
- Darcy Norman, Creator, Quantere
- An Introduction to Apache Streams (Incubating)
This presentation will provide a high-level overview of Apache Streams (incubating), a useful set of tools for Java/Scala developers embarking on new big data projects. Apache Streams is an open-source real-time JVM reference implementation for the Activity Streams specification. Streams contains libraries and patterns for specifying, publishing, and inter-linking data schemas, and assists with conversion of activities and objects between the representation, format, and encoding preferred by supported data providers, processors, and indexes. Streams interfaces for data providers, processors, and persistence support portability of modules between JVM-based runtime modes, meaning code can be written and tested in local mode, then deployed into a scale-out environments such as Hadoop, Jetty, and Spark. The presentation will take a look at some documentation and examples to help you get started, including collecting and analyzing twitter data at scale. Of course there will be Q&A time too.
- Steve Blackmon, VP, Technology, People Pattern
