Happy Horror Hour - Juneteenth: Black Voices in Horror
Details
The AHMC member, Ren, will be co-hosting this event. 😃
From Ren ...
Greetings horror fans. On June 19th, we celebrate Juneteenth, which commemorates the end of slavery for African Americans, with our state of Texas being the last state to recognize emancipation. As horror fans, I wanted to propose this watch list as a celebration of African American voices in horror. The films selected are written, directed, and starring black voices. In recent years, Jordan Peele has brought this new perspective to a wider audience with his three films Get Out, Us, Nope … all of which come at a high recommendation, but I wanted to highlight other influential horror films.
From Christal ...
I'm going to make the following documentary a "must-see" before you watch any of the films. It provides context and well-informed insight into the history of black horror. It's also just darn good!

WATCH LIST
- Blacula (1972) Directed by William Crane (Pluto TV) - 92 min
- Ganja and Hess (1973) Directed By Bill Gunn (Showtime, Kanopy) - 110 min
- Def by Temptation (1990) Directed by James Bond III (Tubi, Shudder, AMC+, Crackle, Freevee) - 95 mins
Digital Rentals/Harder to Find Movies:
- Tales From the Hood (1995) Directed by Rusty Cundieff (Starz) - 97 min
- Eve’s Bayou (1997) Directed by Kasi Lemmons (Showtime, The Criterion Channel, Starz) - 109 mins
- Both films are available to rent digitally.
HOW HAPPY HORROR HOUR WORKS
Before the event …
- Watch the movies from the Watch List at home on your own or with a friend. We do not watch movies at the actual event. Think of it like a book club.
- Movies are chosen based on if 1) it fits the theme and 2) it’s available to stream on a platform that’s free or that most people probably have. (Platforms: Amazon Prime, Freevee, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, Shudder, Tubi)
- It's not a requirement to watch all or even any of the movies on the Watch List. It’s just more fun if you do.
At the event …
- We’re a friendly welcoming bunch and we love new folks so no need to be shy.
- Please purchase something (even if just a soda) while you’re at the restaurant. They’re running a business but being super awesome by giving us a space to meet for free. Also, please tip our servers. We’re a big bunch to wrangle. 😊
(NOTE: If you are unable to make this event, our encore event is Bloodthirsty Thursdays, the next day at the same time at Nosh and Bevvy.)
