The Austin Python Meetup Monthly Meetup
Details
Please note that our location has changed for this month: We will be meeting at the Texas Tribune space, at 823 Congress Ave. More information about the location is provided below.
This month we will have two main presentations.
We are very honored to have a talk by Fernando Perez, author of IPython. He is in town for UT's Advanced Computing Center's Scientific Software Days (http://www.tacc.utexas.edu/softwareday/) and he has kindly agreed to come give a mini version of his invited talk, "Ten years of (interactive) scientific Python", at our meeting. I know many people use IPython as their standard Python shell, but there may also be quite a few folks who haven't seen all that it can do. Fernando can demo features and answer questions in addition to his talk.
Our second speaker is Andy Terrel, who will talk about Ignition, a research code for defining domain specific languages useful for high performance computing (HPC). By providing utilities and examples Ignition enables users to build both languages and code generators. The goal of the project is to allow a separation of concerns between domain experts and performance experts. The hope is by lowering the barriers-of-entry for non-HPC experts HPC systems can be utilized by a wider audience.
As always, there will be time for open discussion and Q&A.
Notes about our new location:
In the last several months, our attendance numbers have consistently been at the seating capacity of Enthought's training room. (Last month we exceeded it by quite a bit, and some folks were forced to listen from the hallway.)
Thus, we have changed our meeting location to the Texas Tribune office in the 823 building, just up the street from the Enthought office. (This is the same location as the inaugural AWPUG meeting last month.) Many, many thanks to the nice folks at the Tribune (http://www.texastribune.org/) for lending us their space, and many thanks to Enthought for hosting us over the years.
The entrance to the building is on 9th street (and not on Congress Ave). Once inside, the security guard will require that someone escort you up the elevator. We will have someone coming down to get people until the meeting starts. If you arrive after 7pm, please email me at pwang@streamitive.com, and we'll send someone down.
