The Austin Python Meetup Monthly Meetup

Details

We typically have a main presentation or a series of lightning talks, followed by discussion and Q&A. There is a diversity of domains and experience levels represented, so come with your questions and be prepared to talk about how you use Python!

This will be an online meeting - please join the meetup at the link listed. Please note that this link may update and updates may appear in the discussion section below - so scroll down if you have technical difficulties.

The presentations will start after 7, yet feel free to join starting 6:30.

In this meetup we will have the following presentations:

Talk 1: Hongsup Shin will present "Data science volunteering for criminal justice"

Talk 2: James Bednar will present "Declarative Python-Based Monitoring Apps"

Details about the presentations below:

-------------------------------------

Talk 1: Many tech workers are interested in using their skills for social impact. In this talk, I will share my experience as a volunteer data scientist at Texas Justice Initiative (TJI), a criminal justice nonprofit in Austin, TX. I will talk about an oversight report on police shooting in Texas that I published last year, and share tips on how tech workers can help nonprofit organizations in a meaningful way.

Bio: Hongsup Shin is a machine learning (ML) researcher and a data scientist at Arm where he builds ML applications to increase efficiency in computer hardware verification. He is also a volunteer data scientist at Texas Justice Initiative, a nonprofit that collects data and provides oversight for criminal justice throughout Texas.

Talk 2: Learn how to make Python-backed data science and monitoring apps without programming! The new Lumen tool from Anaconda makes it easy for you to create custom monitoring apps for your servers, REST APIs, and other data sources, giving you overviews of whatever you need to keep tabs on (ML models, processing jobs, websites, etc.) from a simple text configuration file.

Bio: Jim Bednar is the Director of Technical Consulting at Anaconda, Inc. Dr. Bednar holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Texas, along with degrees in Electrical Engineering and Philosophy. He has published more than 50 papers and books about the visual system and about software development. Dr. Bednar manages the open source Python projects HoloViz, Panel, hvPlot, Datashader, HoloViews, GeoViews, Param, Lumen, and Colorcet. Before Anaconda, Dr. Bednar was a lecturer and researcher in Computational Neuroscience at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, as well as a software and hardware engineer at National Instruments
