Unmasking the Masquerade: A Journey into the World of High Masking

Details

Have you ever wondered what masking can look like in a late-diagnosed autistic individual?

Well, imagine stepping into a grand masquerade ball, where everyone sports elaborate masks that dazzle with feathers, glitter, and mystery. Now, picture one particular guest who seems to change their mask every few minutes to blend in seamlessly with every conversation and group they encounter. This is what masking in a high-masking individual might look like.

High-masking individuals are like chameleons at a social gathering. They're experts at observing and mimicking the social cues, body language, and even speech patterns of those around them. Their goal? To blend in and avoid standing out, much like our masquerade guest who adapts their attire to fit every social circle.

But beneath this social camouflage lies a different story.

In this light-hearted interactive approach, we will be going into a deep dive to explore what lies beneath the mask. You will see both the mask and what is really happening inside. Plus, we will share some of the tools that we use to help us navigate the neurotypical world in an authentic way.
