The compiler is smarter than you (that's why it can't optimize your code)

We have all come to expect the compiler to do a good job when it comes to turning high level C++ into efficient assembly. But sometimes the compiler misses obvious optimization opportunities and we are left to wonder why. We will look at a few recent examples from Martin's day job, whether they really are obvious and how we can get the desired optimization to happen.
