This outing will be at Morro Bay. and is best suited for more experienced paddlers with their own gear, not suitable for first-timers and beginners due to distance and possibility of wind. If you wish to arrange rentals, you may do so and meet us along the way, but you are on your own to arrange any rental gear you may need. There are several outfitters along the waterfront.
Be at the Coleman Park launch area by 9:00. Paddles wet no later than 9:30. Earlier if everyone who is present by 9:00 is on the water. Expect a floating "meet and greet" on the water just after launch.
This outing will be between 6-8 miles round trip. We'll go down to Baywood/Los Osos, take a break at the Back Bay Cafe (bring a little cash for a cuppa Joe) . From that point, paddlers may choose to continue on down to Shark Inlet or head back. OK for SUP, Sit on Tops or whatever, but expect faster paddlers to pull out ahead . You are under no obligation to do the entire trip, but if you suspect you won't go all the way, please have a paddle pal along so that you don't have to return alone. Wind on the return is likely, and may be too much for the less experienced. They and SUP paddlers may opt to return to the launch point earlier.
Total distance about 6-8 miles and around 3 hours total time.
High tide is at 11:20 at +2.70 feet. The next low tide is 3:30 at +2.2 feet, so there will be some tidal current on the way in, but not enough to be of concern. It's too soon to forecast winds, but they typically run between 4-7 mph out of the N/W for the morning. Temps are commonly low to mid 60's to start with partly cloudy skies. Dress appropriately.
We'll parallel the Embarcadero down to Baywood, then hug the sand spit on the way back.
Reminder..all paddlers participating in Avila Beach Paddlers outings are expected to WEAR their PFD. No exceptions.
Members may bring one non-member guest if desired.
