Melbourne AWS User Group #148 - May 2025

Details

🎉 Join us for the Melbourne AWS User Group Meetup on Wednesday 28 May! 🎉

The nights are turning cold, so why not warm yourself by meeting up with your friendly AWS community? As usual, we're back on the last Wednesday of the month in the NAB Events Hub on 395 Bourke.

We have two talks lined up for this month, Trent will start us up with a talk he'll give at the Sydney Summit about secure container pipelines. This is followed by Cathy who will talk about how we can view the architecture of our cloud environment through the lens of our own home. And of course we also have our regular sections, covering what's going on in the community and what new goodies AWS has brought us in the past month.

As a reminder, we will start with the food and socialising at 6 pm, but the actual contents of the meetup (and live stream) will begin at 6:30.

Our thanks to Mantel Group for their continued sponsorship.

See below for the full agenda. The event will be streamed on YouTube as always.

## Building a Secure Container Pipeline with Amazon Inspector and GitHub Actions

  • Trent Hornibrook

Level 300

Trent will explain how to use GitHub Actions with Amazon Inspector to reduce the security risk of vulnerable containers running in your AWS environment.

Trent will be giving this same talk at the Sydney Summit in the Developer Lounge track.

## Building Blocks of the Cloud: AWS Architecture Through the Lens of a Home

  • Cathy Weng

Level 200

Designing cloud architectures can feel abstract, especially to those new to AWS. In this talk, we’ll use a grounded analogy—building a home—to demystify the process of designing well-architected cloud systems. Just as a home has a foundation, rooms, utilities, and security, an AWS system has networks, compute, storage, security, etc. We’ll walk through a house being “built” in the cloud, room by room, using AWS services that align with each phase. By the end, attendees will walk away with a step-by-step mental model for designing scalable, secure AWS systems—and maybe even a blueprint for their next project.

We are always looking for speakers and believe everyone has an interesting talk hiding inside themselves. If you are interested in letting that talk out at a future event you can get in touch at the meetup, on the website (https://melb.awsug.org.au/speak/), or reach out to one of the organisers on our Slack.
