19:00 - "Jenkins vs. CodePipeline"

Speakers:
Rafael Schleetz Benvenuti & Steffen Gebert (EMnify https://emnify.com)

Abstract:
Who has not used Jenkins? Who has not a love-hate relationship with it? – At EMnify, we are heavy Jenkins users, but always considering alternatives, where hosted services make our live easier. Therefore, we recently - once again - looked at AWS CodePipeline and its friends CodeCommit, CodeBuild, and CodeDeploy. In this talk, we compare the current state of the two ecosystems regarding their simplicity and flexibility for implementing both trivial as well as complex pipelines. Further, we cover the topics deployment and maintenance, security, costs, and usability.

Rafael is a Site Reliability Engineer at EMnify in Berlin. He hates Jenkins and running servers.
Steffen is Technology Director Infrastructure at EMnify in Würzburg. He likes Jenkins and is unsure about his relation to AWS Code.]

20:00 - "A first look at Amazon RDS Proxy"
Speaker: Renato Losio (Funambol)

Abstract:
At re:invent in Las Vegas earlier in December, AWS announced the public preview of RDS Proxy, a fully managed database proxy that sits between your application and RDS. The new service offers “share established database connections, improving database efficiency and application scalability”. But one the benefits that cought my eye is the ability to reduce the downtime in case of an instance failure and a failover. Let's give it a try!

20:20 - "Updating thousands of connected elevators OTA with AWS IoT"
Speaker: Akhil Jain (Vestner Aufzüge - https://www.vestner.de)

Abstract:
In the world of connected devices, often stopping device operation or sending technicians to manually update firmware is not a feasible, efficient option. In this talk, I will tackle the problem of automatically triggered over-the-air software/firmware updates to thousands of connected elevators, and present a solution we implemented at Vestner Digital using AWS IoT jobs, an edge deployment agent running on Industrial Raspberry Pis and AWS IoT Device Management.

[Speaker bio:
Akhil is working at Vestner as a software engineer. He is passionate about Code pipeline, Lambda, and many other AWS technologies to build IoT solutions. He finished his master’s degree in Intelligent systems at the University of Bielefeld. He worked as a research assistant in the Ambient intelligence group at Bielefeld University. He additionally has got experience giving lectures on data mining.]
