Speaker 1: Jano Barnard:
For this talk, Jano will take us on a journey of how BrightEarth On-Demand processes millions of square kilometres of satellite imagery to map buildings, roads, and forests using computer vision techniques – without a single long-running server.

In this session you’ll see how event-driven triggers hand off work from API Gateway and Lambda through SQS & EventBridge, then burst into hundreds of concurrent AWS Batch jobs that run on ECS-backed compute.

We’ll cover queues, job definitions, compute-environment choices, scratch storage on instance storage, cost controls with Savings Plans and EC2 Spot Instances and how to integrate serverless database solutions like Aurora Serverless and DynamoDB.

To wrap up, you’ll get tuning tips, real throughput numbers, and a lift-and-shift checklist for your own imagery, genomics, or simulation pipeline – no sales pitch, just production lessons.
