TALK 1 - High Performance Computing - A Serverless Story
Eoin Shanaghy, CTO of fourTheorem and Colum Thorne VP Architecture, RennaissanceRe.

Join us as we talk about our migration journey of a high-performance computing (HPC) financial modelling workload to AWS. We transitioned from a traditional, on-premise, HPC infrastructure to a re-imagined, serverless-first implementation on AWS. We started by thinking big and went all-in on innovation, embracing managed AWS services to deliver massive scale and reduce the engineering burden. You'll hear all about financial modelling, the goals and the challenges. We will cover how important it is to know your gaps and address them up front. You will hear how we got started and refined the architecture as the solution evolved. We'll also dive deep into some of the challenges we encountered by pushing the boundaries of scale on AWS.

Eoin Shanaghy is the CTO of fourTheorem, a fully remote company founded in Ireland. fourTheorem is an AWS partner specialising in cloud migration and modernisation. Eoin is co-host of the AWS Bites Podcast and the co-author of AI as a Service from Manning Publications.

Colum is VP, Platform Architecture at RenaissanceRe – he has had a long career with RenRe in multiple different technology roles across software development, data engineering, and risk modeling. Colum has years of experience working with AWS and is currently leading RenRe’s AWS transformation journey. Prior to RenRe Colum worked as a consultant for BearingPoint.

TALK 2 - Sustainability at AWS and the Carbon Calculator Tool by Stephen Gallagher, SA AWS

AWS and Amazon are on a path to powering global operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025 – 5 years ahead of the original target of 2030. In this talk, Stephen will summarise the findings of recent reports that showed that businesses running applications on AWS, rather than on-premises data centres, can reduce their energy consumption by nearly 80%. He’ll also show how businesses can now measure and track this using the Carbon Footprint Tool in their AWS account, released in March of this year.

Stephen started his career as a Mechanical Engineer for Mercedes Formula 1 Team, helping to design the championship winning 2014 engine. After working at Ford and a Connected Vehicle start-up in London, he moved to AWS as a Solutions Architect initially working with engineering companies in the UK. Originally from Belfast, he decided to transfer to the Dublin team and now works with many Irish customers to help them innovate using AWS.
