QCon New York (June 25th - 29th 2018) is a conference for senior software engineers and architects on the patterns, practices, and use cases leveraged by the world’s most innovative software shops.

Each year, QCon NYC brings in 1000 senior developers and architects to share lessons and software knowledge. By bringing meetups and the conference attendees together at Community Night, we hope to Accelerate the software side of human progress.

Serverless NYC is honored and excited to be invited as a QCon Community Night guest. Furthermore, Yan Cui, the QCon Serverless coordinator will be presenting!

7:00pm-8:00pm Applying principles of chaos engineering to Serverless
Yan Cui - Principal Engineer - DAZN

Chaos engineering is a discipline that focuses on improving system resilience through controlled experiments that expose the inherent chaos and failure modes in our system, before these failure modes manifest themselves like a wildfire in production and impact our users. Most of the publicised tools and articles focus on killing EC2 instances, and the efforts in the serverless community has been largely limited to moving those tools into AWS Lambda functions. But how can we apply the same principles of chaos to a serverless architecture built around AWS Lambda functions? Can we adapt existing practices to expose the inherent chaos in these systems? What are the limitations and new challenges that we need to consider?

Yan Cui Bio:
I’m an experienced engineer who has worked with AWS for nearly 10 years. I have been an architect and lead developer with a variety of industries ranging from investment banks, e-commerce to mobile gaming. I have worked up and down the stack, from writing cloud-hosted functions with AWS Lambda all the way down to implementing custom reliable-UDP protocol for real-time multiplayer mobile games.

In the last 2 years I have worked extensively with AWS Lambda in production, and I have been very active in sharing my experiences and the lessons I have learnt, some of my work has even made their way into the Well-Architected whitepaper published by AWS.

I am polyglot in both spoken and programming languages, I am fluent in both English and Mandarin, and count C#, F#, Scala, Node.js and Erlang amongst programming languages that I have worked with professionally. Although I enjoy learning different programming languages and paradigms, I still hold F# as my undisputed favourite.

I am a regular speaker at user groups and conferences internationally, and I am also the instructor for Production-Ready Serverless and one of the co-authors of F# Deep Dives. In my spare time I share my thoughts on topics such as AWS, serverless, functional programming and chaos engineering on this very blog.
